Pope Francis urges world leaders to protect environment

Jalil Afridi

New York: Pope Francis urged the world leaders who gathered at the United Nation to take concrete steps towards improvement of the environment and to stop being “selfish”  and stop destruction of the environment on emergency basis.

“We human beings are part of the environment,” Francis said. “We live in communion with it, since the environment itself entails ethical limits which human activity must acknowledge and respect. … Any harm done to the environment, therefore, is harm done to humanity.”

The speech to the 193-member U.N. General Assembly expanded on themes Francis has already discussed during his whirlwind trip to the United States and Cuba. His visit to the United Nations is the fifth by a pope.

Speaking in Spanish, Francis greeted the citizens of all the nations represented in the hall before addressing the global dangers of unlimited power.

The U.N. was created after World War II, at a moment of history “marked by our technical ability to overcome distances and frontiers and, apparently, to overcome all natural limits to the exercise of power,” he said. The U.N. was created as a response to technological power that, “in the hands of nationalistic or falsely universalist ideologies, is capable of perpetrating tremendous atrocities,” he added.

“The U.N. founding charter is based on the development and promotion of international law,” Francis said. “The limitation of power is an idea implicit in the concept of law itself. … No human individual or group can consider itself absolute, permitted to bypass the dignity and the rights of other individuals or their social groupings.”

On the environment, Francis said Christians and other religions believe man is supposed to take care of nature. “He is not authorized to abuse it, much less to destroy it.”

Environmental destruction goes hand-in-hand with injustice, and is a result of a system that is too focused on material wealth, Francis said.

“A selfish and boundless thirst for power and material prosperity” that misuses natural resources and degrades the environment also leads to social ills by excluding those who are physically, economically or politically weak, he said. “Economic and social exclusion is a complete denial of human fraternity and a grave offense against human rights and the environment.”

Francis also discussed the need to address other “scourges” of the world. He called for the elimination of nuclear weapons and urged world leaders to work “toward the complete prohibition of these weapons.” He praised the Iran nuclear deal reached through diplomacy, and said he hopes it will last, “with the cooperation of all the parties involved.”

He spoke of “military and political interventions not coordinated with members of the international community,” singling out the strife spreading across the Middle East, where the radical Islamic State has been growing and warring against governments across the Arab world and North Africa.

“I must appeal to you regarding the painful situation in the entire Middle East and North Africa where Christians and even members of the majority religion have been forced to witness the destruction of their places of worship, places of cultural heritage,” Francis said. Many of those people are “paying for their religious belief with their own lives or though slavery,” he said.

He scolded the assembled delegates that in response their reaction “has to be more than drawing up lists of strategies and disagreements.”

“The international community should do all it can to stop and prevent systematic religious violence against ethnic and religious minorities and to protect innocent peoples,” he said. Similar attention needs to be given to conflicts in Syria, Ukraine, Iraq and parts of Africa, he said.

He urged world leaders to put aside partisan and individual interests to seek the common good and benefit ordinary men, women and children who suffer the most from the poverty, conflicts and misdeeds of the world.

Missing from the pope’s address was the topic of Europe’s growing migrants crisis, which he was largely expected to address head-on. Addressing Congress in Washington on Thursday, the Argentine Pope described himself as the son of immigrants addressing a nation of immigrants as the world faces the worst refugee crisis since World War II.

Future generations should be taught that “to live as nobly and as justly as possible,” they should “not to turn their back on our neighbors,” he told lawmakers. Immigrants should be viewed as persons, not numbers, and treated in a way that is “humane, just and fraternal,” he added.

Before the pontiff’s address Friday, U.N. General Secretary Ban-Ki Moon thanked Francis “for demonstrating once again your remarkable global stature as a man of faith among all faiths.”

Shahi Syed being check mate

Posted on September 18, 2015 by jalil Afridi

image Jalil Afridi/Naimat Khan WASHINGTON/KARACHI: A senior Pakistani politician belonging to Awami National Party is being check mate and is reluctant to take a person to court having done a fraud of RS10.4millon with him due to ‘dubious transactions’ and ‘fears of money laundering case’, credible sources told The Frontier Post. Senator Shahi Syed, the ANP’s Sindh President and father-in-law of Aimal Wali Khan confessed to have lost $75000, which is equal to Rs7.82million in fraud by a person belonging to Swabi district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Sources said the person alleged of fraud is Furqan Khan, a cousin of the speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly, Asad Qaisar who is currently in Washington DC. Shahi Syed while talking to The Frontier Post said that Furqan was partner with his elder son in a business and now Furqan is refusing to return the $75,000 he had taken from his son. According to sources Furqan has told Shahi Syed to go to American courts against him if his claim is correct but ‘dubious transaction of money’ is the main hurdle in Shahi Syed way to fight his case in the court. Shahi Syed is instead using his contacts for securing the money through Jirga. When Shahi Syed was asked by The Frontier Post as to why he was not going to American courts despite a big fraud with him, he said he is persuading Furqan through Jirga. “He is one among us, he is from Swabi and it is better that we resolve the issue through Jirga amicably”, he told the FP on phone from Mardan. Source said Shahi Syed had gone to Mardan in order to hold a Jirga for securing his money. When asked as through which channel he had sent such a huge amount of money to Washington, he said it was his son’s money, and he prior moving to the US had been running his own showroom in Dubai since 2007. Shahi Syed refuted that his sons had acquired US residency, which requires of an applicant to submit five million U.S. Dollars with the US immigration department. Credible sources told this scribe that both sons of Shahi Syed have obtained residency against the payment of $1million, equal to RS100.43millions. The ANP Sindh chief refuted and said one of his sons was studying in the Washington University on a student visa whereas the elder one had obtained a two-year Visa and was doing his own business there. Sources, however, said Yaseen, the older son of Shahi Syed, had applied for the residency whereas the process was also started for the youngest one. The ANP leader has four sons; two of them – one a Doctor and another Lawyer – are resided in the United Kingdom. Shahi Syed has confined himself to Islamabad. Shahi Syed, who was born and raised in Babuzai village of Mardan district of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa moved to Karachi where he started driving a Rikshaw on lease. But he soon become a rich man and then attracted the attention of ANP’s central leadership. Almost all old stalwarts, including Ameen Khattak, were sidelined and his residence, Mardan House, situated in the affluent DHA neighborhood became the party’s center in Sindh. Shahid Syed further came closer to Asfandiyar’s family after giving the hands of his daughter to son of ANP Chief. It’s likely that the authorities in National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which has become ultra active these days, will kick off probing the case because some people close to Asad Qaiser’s cousin have shared information with the corruption watchdog. Insiders in ANP say the ANP Chief Asfandyar Ali Khan has also setup several businesses in Malaysia, Dubai and other gulf states with the help of Shahi Syed. Disgruntled leaders, including the late Azam Hoti, had been accusing ANP leadership of huge corruption. Asfandyar’s step mother and president ANP-Wali has also alleged the ANP leadership of massive corruption. It’s also pertinent to mention that many second and third tier leaders have also applied for asylums in USA and European countries under the guise of Taliban threat after transferring huge amounts from Pakistan to their respective countries.

Washington DC: The Chairman of Pakhtoons American Community Association (PACA), Khalid Khan said that the only thing which Pakhtoons need in order to become successful globally is to achieve good education and to be provided with respectable jobs opportunities.
In a interview with The Frontier Post in Washington Dc, Khalid Khan, who is an engineer by profession and senior staffer of a telecom company and who belongs to Swabi said that all stereo types created about the Pakhtoons are made by those who are afraid from the strength and success of Pakhtoons.
Khalid Khan informed that PACA was launched in 2005 with just four members whereas today it has more than two hundred registered members, which includes highly educated Pakhtoons from different walks of life, including Salma Atta Ullah Jan, who was the first Pakhtoon woman Congressman of America. Salma is also the daughter of Saranjam Khan of PML(N).
He regretted the fact that now a days Pakhtoons  are being associated with terrorism and other criminal activities where as history of the Pakhtoons states very clearly that they have always remained very peaceful not only among themselves but also with believers of different religions and faiths. Khalid Khan gave examples of Ghazi Aman Ullah Khan and Bacha Khan who were great Pakhtoon leaders and said that these leaders also supported peace and never opted for bloodshed of Pakhtoons.
With regard to the Taliban uprising in Swat, Khalid Khan wondered as to why the government machinery took so long to take action the Taliban whereas everyone knew what was happening in Swat. He said that Swat operation would have not taken place had Fazlullah and father in law Sufi Muhammed were eliminated in first place while they were doing their atrocities in day light in Swat. Khalid Khan lauded the efforts and love of ordinary Pakhtoons for their fellow Pakhtoon brothers during the Swat operation and especially mention the Shah Mansoor Camp which was organized in Swabi for the displaced people of Swat.
With regard to PACA, Khalid Khan informed that this association is meant for those Pakhtoons who reside in America and especially those who are in their early stage of migration to America. PACA also helps Pakhtoon students in Pakistan with regard to providing them information about school and colleges in America, he informed.
Khalid Khan further said that PACA has recently formed a PACA Emergency Funds, for those Pakhtoons are facing severe financial or health problems in America.
With regard to the new generation of Pakhtoons in America, Khalid Khan that the learning Paktho language seems to be main problem for the new generation of Pakhtoons, as they have nothing to read, write or any other sort of interaction with Pakhto language.
Answering a question with regard to education system in Pakistan, Khalid Khan said that schools and colleges in Pakistan should focus more on practical education instead of theoretical education.
Khalid Khan favoured the creation of more provinces in Pakistan and said that a new province should also be created for the people and region of FATA, so people have more belonging to their province and it is easily managed as well.
Khalid Khan shared his deep sympathies with the Internally Displace Persons from the tribal areas and hoped that they would soon return to their homes. He said that “it is so sad to see millions of Pakhtoons living in tents away from their home in twenty first century.”

It’s now or never for FATA

Comment: Jalil Afridi

Leaders of FATA Grand Alliance after holding a grand Jirga have demanded a separate province for the people of FATA. Who else could know better about FATA than its own people? The Frontier Post has also since long been demanding the same for FATA but those at helm of affairs never paid any attention. A matter fact it was the demand of separate province which compelled the previous rulers of ANP in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to stop advertisements to The Frontier Post for over three years because the mighty ANP leader Asfandyar Wali Khan wanted The Frontier Post to change its stance and wanted us to write in favor of the emerging of FATA in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. We were very surprised to see that the party which never gets tired for raising slogans for the Pakhtuns rights were so anti FATA but then we realized that the people of FATA never had any liking for ANP either.

It is a great opportunity for both Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, General Raheel Sharif, PTI chairman Imran Khan and KP Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to form a joint committee and submit a resolution in the National Assembly for the earliest formation of a separate province for FATA. With its formation half of the problems which Pakistan is facing today will be solved immediately. Not only that this new province will have as great opportunities as Balochistan with regard to earning billions of dollars through its trade route and minerals, it will also protect the long stretched border which is used for all the terrorists activities inside Pakistan.

How can millions of people of FATA still in twenty first century be living under a draconian law of FCR, where a small grade officer can put a whole family behind bars for a crime committed by a single individual.? How can the people of FATA feel the true love of their country when they can not even approach a court for appealing a sentence given to them by a single individual who is a junior officer? How can millions of people live in respect and honour when they don’t have any good school, college or hospital to go to? How can narcotics flow be stopped inside Pakistan where there are five million drugs addicts and there is no Anti Narcotics Force in FATA? How can terrorism and Indians and other spies be stopped by entering Pakistan when there are no police stations in FATA? How can industries and mines be explored when there is no WAPDA or Chamber or ministry of mines in FATA? How can a governor sitting in a mansion in Peshawar look after the whole of FATA? How can an army which is engaged in every nook and corner of the country defending the motherland can protect the people of FATA when they don’t have a FATA regiment?

The people of FATA who are mostly tamed as drug dealers and terrorists are the same people who were till recent years considered as free of cost army of Pakistan. They were considered as heros during Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. They were called as the bravest people right after independence when they fought India and gained the little Kashmir which we have today.

The people of FATA must be given a province of their own and it should be done at the earliest. The more it is delayed the more problems Pakistan will face in coming days.

Congratulation to former senator Hamidullah Jan Afridi, Malik Khan Mar Jan, Malik Habibullah, Retd Colonel Amanullah and others for making this Jirga successful and for raising the voice for the people of FATA.
